English National Senior & Junior Karate Championships 5th & 6th April 2008

Khalsa Karate had just two representatives in the kata events – brother and sister Jack and Rachel Newey and both produced outstanding results.

Jack was in the Boys 12 – 13 years Kata event and with 27 competitors he would need to perform five katas if he wanted to get to the final. Fortunately this proved no problem for him and he achieved a fantastic run of five rounds, winning all 3-0 without losing a single flag and taking the title with a sparkling Chatanyara in the final.

Rachel was in the Girls 14 -15 years Kata, but had also entered the Cadets for experience as the minimum for this event had been lowered to 15 years (which she made by just two weeks having turned 15 in March!). By bad luck both events were scheduled at the same time and so the three girls who had entered both had to alternate from one mat to the other to keep up with both categories. Rachel's fitness levels were sorely tested, because she got to the finals of both events with some excellent performances. In the cadet final she was up against England Team and European bronze medallist Ashleigh Kenney. Refusing to be fazed by the opposition, she produced an excellent annan to earn a flag and take the silver 1-2.

Back in her own category she had also made the final against her fellow training partner Emma Lucraft and with her ninth kata of the day she performed chatanyara in a nail bitingly close contest where she was edged into second place 1-2.
