Capital Karate Open 2009

Sunday 12th July saw four members of the junior team fight at Clacton for the Capital Open Championships.

All three kata members were in the same group and first up was Franny Hardcastle who performed a very strong Bassai Dai and scored a respectable 21 points. Next was Luke who like sister Fran performed a very tidy kata however Lukes Unsu jump was so good he nearly landed 360 degrees. Anyway after a very clean performance he scored 20.4. Both Franny and Luke came around 5th and 7th respectively. Last up was Bleu who performed a strong Annan and scored a very good 21.7 and taking Gold.

Next was the fighting and first up was Bleu who demolished his first opponent 8-0. Next fight was up against a tough fighter and although Bleu has beaten him before couldn't find the range and eventually lost 2-5.

Next up was brother Cuba and Cuba took no prisoners by taking the first two fights 5-1, and 3-0. in the Semis Cuba faced a very scrappy but determined kid and although he won 2-0 this was a good score as the kid was very unorthodox. Having reached the final Cuba came up against Bleu's competitor and an early bad start made it hard for Cuba to claw back. However although Cuba tried his distance and frustration was showing and finally settled for a well deserved Silver 2-5.

Last up was Francesca Hardcastle and like the boys Franny attacked very well and took the first two fights 8-3 and 8.0 to reach the final. Having made the final Fran came up against the girl she lost to at the English Open. This time Franny made sure she beat the girl taking the first 4 points. Her opponent took the next two points and Fran upped the pace and made heavy contact losing another point, however still taking the win 4-3 to take Gold.

Sensei Sat commented on how proud he was with the few students he took this weekend. "This is a very tough comp and not known so much for techniques but rather power and speed and this certainly showed today. However the kids never fail me and came away with great result!! All in all I think they couldn't have done much better and showed their team spirit win or lose both on and off the mats!!! Well done kids very proud!!!"
