RACHEL NEWEY WINS DOUBLE BRONZE IN AUSTRALIARachel Newey travelled across the world to combine karate with holiday in Australia for Easter. Entering the prestigious Australian Open she entered the Junior and Senior Open Kata categories and won bronze medals in both. In the Junior comp she progressed smoothly through three rounds to the semi final and did Unshu against the Vietnamese girl representing Australia who was defending champion and did a Shotokan kata. Rachel was disappointed to lose 3-2 but won 5-0 in the repecharge final with an excellent Chatanayra to claim bronze.

Determined to perform as well in the Senior event Rachel again won through to the semi final doing three strong katas. She was now up against the Australian senior No 1 Nicole Bridgeman so Rachel performed Chatanyara again against a shotokan kata and thought she had done enough to win but it was not to be losing 4-1 and she was again in the repecharge final.

Performing Unshu she beat the 18 to 21 kata champion 4-1 to win her second bronze of the day. Overall a good day as Rachel having recently turned 17 performed strongly all day in a top international competition and only lost out to the eventual gold medallists.

Sensei Sat commented " This is a fantastic result for Rachel especially on the back off winning Double Gold at Midland Regionals. Rachel is a very determined and strong minded student and she needed that this week to fight off top international competitors in both kata categories. We all at the club are very very proud of Rachels accomplishments and she produces yet another fantastic result. Well done Rachel!!!"
